Full-Time Clinical (MD) Academic Appointments - Foreign-Trained Physicians

Description:  Foreign-trained physicians are doctors whose MD degree (or equivalent) was earned at a university outside Canada.  Full-time Clinical (MD) appointments require the physician to be on active staff at a fully affiliated or, occasionally, a community-affiliated teaching hospital.  They generally belong to a practice plan that supports academic work financially.  Their academic work, which includes teaching in patient care, accounts for at least 80% of their professional working time.

Duration:  Initial appointment is generally for three years.  Following a successful probationary review, faculty member is given a continuing annual appointment which can only be terminated for cause.

Approval:  Foreign-trained physicians must be recruited through an advertised search process.  Where the University is formally represented on the search committee, appointments are submitted to the Senior Advisor to the Dean on Clinical Affairs for approval.  Where there is no University representation on the search committee, the appointment application must first be reviewed by the Faculty Appointments Advisory Committee (FAAC).

Available Rank:  Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor.
