Senior Promotions

to Associate Professor and Professor, except those undergoing Tenure Review or Continuing Status Review

Description:

Academic promotion in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine recognizes the notable achievements of faculty in their discipline and contributions to the University of Toronto. Promotion is assessed based on accomplishments in the areas of research, creative professional activity, teaching and education, and leadership/administration. Candidate should document achievements in each applicable area.

The Temerty Faculty of Medicine also values and encourages faculty applicants to submit and clearly describe their work to support Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Indigeneity, and Accessibility (EDIIA). EDIIA are core principles essential in addressing systemic barriers and inequities that are experienced by underrepresented and equity-deserving populations. Incorporating and centering EDIIA ensures meaningful research, education, leadership, administration, engagement, and clinical practice that can better address the pressing issues and needs of diverse communities. EDIIA contributions have broad scope and have relevance for teaching, research, CPA, and service.

There are two exceptions to promotion that do not fall under this process. First is the promotion of tenure-track faculty to a tenured Associate Professor position. The second is the promotion of continuing teaching stream faculty to a continuing status position at the rank of Associate Professor, Teaching Stream. The University of Toronto Policy and Procedures on Academic Appointments apply to the tenure and continuing status review.

Approval:

The Decanal Promotion Committee has the very important job of reviewing candidates recommended by the Chair of Departments and Departmental Promotion Committees for promotion to ranks of Associate Professor and Professor. The Decanal Promotion Committee makes its recommendations to the Dean, who then reviews those decisions and submits their approval to the Provost, which is subsequently reported to the Academic Board.
